LUBBOCK, TX — As a strong winter storm pushes into the South Plains this weekend, local officials and emergency experts are urging residents to prepare now for ice, snow, freezing temperatures, and hazardous travel. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Lubbock and surrounding areas from Friday afternoon through Sunday, forecasting a mix of snow, sleet, and ice that could accumulate and make roads extremely slick.
City leaders have activated the Lubbock Emergency Operations Center to coordinate response efforts with fire, police, public works, and utility partners, monitoring conditions around the clock.
With bitter cold on the way and the possibility of power disruptions or dangerous roadways, here are expert-recommended steps to stay safe, warm, and ready as the storm approaches.
Stay informed and plan ahead:
Local weather alerts, official forecasts, and emergency updates will be your best source of storm timing and severity information — check frequently and share updates with friends and family. Emergency managers recommend having a communication plan in place with key contacts before conditions deteriorate.
Build an emergency kit:
Stock at least three days’ worth of essentials — including non-perishable food, water (1 gallon per person per day), medications, flashlights, batteries, and a first-aid kit.
Protect your plumbing:
Wrap exposed pipes and insulate outdoor faucets. Opening cabinets under sinks to let warm air circulate can also help prevent freezing. Consider allowing faucets to drip slowly when temperatures drop below freezing — this can reduce the risk of burst pipes.
Stay warm safely:
Use heating equipment approved for indoor use, and ensure carbon monoxide detectors are working. Never use ovens or outdoor grills to heat your home — they can produce deadly fumes.
Roads are expected to become icy and dangerous — even 4-wheel drive doesn’t make you invincible on black ice. If travel is unavoidable, go during daylight and let someone know your route and expected arrival.
