Texas Tech Red Raiders Men’s Basketball: Early Season Momentum and High Expectations

Nov 12, 2025 01:41PM ● By Alyssa Cantu

LUBBOCK, Texas — The Red Raiders are off to a strong start in the 2025-26 campaign, but early tests are already showing the challenges that lie ahead for the Texas Tech University men’s basketball program.

 Where They Stand

  • Texas Tech enters the season ranked No. 11 in the AP Top 25.

  • The team currently holds a 2-1 overall record, with conference play yet to begin (0-0 in Big 12).

  • The schedule ahead is formidable, including marquee non-conference matchups and the rigorous Big 12 gauntlet.

Early Highlights & Areas of Concern

One of the most promising signs came in Tech’s opening games: for example, standout forward JT Toppin turned in a massive performance with 35 points and 11 rebounds in an 81-77 loss at Illinois Fighting Illini.
Coach Grant McCasland praised the second-half surge but pointed to the need for more physicality and better execution down the stretch.

  Looking Ahead

The Red Raiders still have a full, challenging calendar:

  • Non-conference games vs. teams such as Duke Blue Devils and LSU Tigers among others.

  • Then comes the Big 12 grind: conference games will determine seeding, postseason positioning, and national perception.

  • With expectations high—JT Toppin was tabbed as the Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year, and teammate LeJuan Watts named Newcomer of the Year—Tech must match hype with execution.

 Why This Season Matters

After a breakout 2024-25 season (28-9 record, Elite Eight appearance) under McCasland, there is both momentum and pressure.
For the Red Raiders:

  • They must prove they can sustain success and compete at the highest level every night.

  • They must show resilience — the Illinois result is a reminder that in tight games, margins matter.

  • For fans and the program, this season is about making a statement: Big 12 dominance, national relevance, and deep NCAA Tournament run.

 Final Thoughts

Texas Tech’s 2025-26 men’s basketball season is off to a promising start, but the road ahead is steep. With star power, experienced leadership, and high expectations, the Red Raiders have the pieces. The question now: can they put it together game after game, especially when the margin for error shrinks?

If they do, Lubbock fans may have another memorable run coming.
