College GameDay Returns to Lubbock as Texas Tech Hosts BYU in Top-10 Showdown

LUBBOCK, Texas — For the first time in 17 years, ESPN’s College GameDay is setting up shop in Lubbock. The national spotlight will shine on Jones AT&T Stadium this Saturday as No. 9 Texas Tech hosts unbeaten No. 5 BYU in a Big 12 clash with major conference and playoff implications.

The GameDay crew — Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso, Desmond Howard, and Pat McAfee — will broadcast live from campus starting at 8 a.m. ET (7 a.m. CT), marking only the second time the iconic show has visited Texas Tech. The last appearance came in 2008, when the Red Raiders stunned No. 1 Texas in one of the most memorable nights in program history.

High Stakes in the Big 12 Race

Both teams enter the weekend with impressive résumés. Texas Tech sits at 8-1 overall and 5-1 in Big 12 play after last week’s 34-21 win over Oklahoma State. BYU remains perfect at 8-0 (5-0 Big 12), led by a disciplined defense and balanced offense that has powered them to their best start since joining the conference.

A victory would keep BYU on track for a potential College Football Playoff berth, while Texas Tech could move into the top tier of the national conversation with another signature win at home.

Crews began setting up the College GameDay stage on campus Wednesday, and fans are already gearing up for what’s expected to be one of the largest crowds of the season. City officials and the university have coordinated expanded parking, security, and fan zones to handle the influx of visitors.

Local businesses are also preparing for a surge. Hotels across Lubbock have been booked for weeks, and bars and restaurants near campus — including favorites like Spanky’s and Chimy’s — are expecting record crowds.

“Lubbock comes alive for weekends like this,” said local business owner Maria Torres. “GameDay being here just puts it over the top.”

Tradition Meets the National Stage

Fans are expected to uphold long-standing Texas Tech traditions, including the beloved tortilla toss — though officials have reminded attendees to celebrate responsibly following recent discussions about limiting the practice.

The Red Raider spirit squads and “The Goin’ Band from Raiderland” will perform throughout the morning broadcast, adding to the festive atmosphere that has become synonymous with football Saturdays in West Texas.
