Essential Safety Tips for dog walking

Walking your dog in the summer requires extra care to keep them safe from heat-related dangers. Here are essential safety tips to follow:

โ˜€๏ธ 1. Avoid the Hottest Part of the Day

  • Best times: Early morning or late evening (before 10 a.m. or after 7 p.m.)

  • Midday sun can cause heatstroke and burn sensitive paws.

๐Ÿพ 2. Check Pavement Temperature

  • Test with your hand or foot: If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for paws.

  • Asphalt can reach 125ยฐF+ even if itโ€™s only 85ยฐF outside โ€” that can burn pads in seconds.

Tip: Walk on grass or dirt trails when possible.

๐Ÿ’ง 3. Bring Water for Both of You

  • Carry a collapsible bowl and water bottle.

  • Offer water every 15โ€“20 minutes, especially for active dogs or long walks.

๐ŸŒณ 4. Stick to Shady Routes

  • Choose routes with trees, grass, and shade to avoid overheating.

  • Parks and trails are better than sidewalks or roads.

๐Ÿงข 5. Know the Signs of Overheating

Watch for these symptoms of heatstroke:

  • Heavy panting, drooling

  • Red or pale gums

  • Lethargy or collapse

  • Vomiting or diarrhea

๐Ÿšจ If you see these signs, stop immediately, move them to shade, and cool with wet towels. Call a vet.

โœ‚๏ธ 6. Grooming Helps (But Donโ€™t Shave)

  • Keep your dog well-groomed to prevent matting and help with airflow.

  • Donโ€™t fully shave double-coated breeds โ€“ their fur protects them from sunburn and heat.

๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ 7. Use Pet Sunscreen (If Needed)

  • Dogs with light-colored or thin fur (especially on nose, ears, belly) can get sunburned.

  • Use pet-safe sunscreen โ€” never human sunscreen with zinc oxide or PABA.

๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ 8. Adjust the Walk Length

  • Shorten walks during extreme heat.

  • Include more frequent breaks in shade or indoors.

๐Ÿ‘Ÿ 9. Use Protective Gear if Needed

  • Dog booties or paw wax can help protect feet from hot surfaces.

  • Lightweight harnesses are better than collars for comfort and breathability.

๐ŸŽ’ Bonus Tip: Make It Fun Indoors

On very hot days, substitute outdoor walks with:

  • Tug-of-war

  • Indoor fetch

  • Hide-and-seek with treats
